205 Political Appointees Dismissed Over the Past Three Months: Shareef

Presidential Office Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundu) has announced that 205 political appointees have been dismissed from their posts over the past three months.

Briefing the press at the state media, Shareef stated that the dismissals so far have been limited to employees across four specific categories. According to Shareef, these positions include State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Senior Political Directors, and Political Directors. He further noted that the decision to terminate these officials was made following a comprehensive review of various factors.

Noting that the evaluation of political appointees is currently underway, Shareef stated that the government will disclose the number of employees dismissed through this process in the coming days.

During a press conference held last April, Shareef stated that the total number of political appointees in the government would be disclosed once the ongoing restructuring and rightsizing efforts are completed.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office with a pledge to limit the number of political appointees to no more than 700. However, more than a year into President Muizzu's administration, the government has yet to disclose the total number of political staff currently employed.

The government appointed a significant number of individuals to various positions in the lead-up to the 2024 Parliamentary Elections and the Local Council Elections held this April. However, under the guise of reducing state expenditure, state-owned enterprises are now unfairly dismissing numerous employees from their posts.

Despite the ongoing dismissal of employees from state-owned enterprises, the government continues to appoint numerous individuals to political positions.
