Concerns raised over ongoing dismissal of employees from Fuvahmulah City branches of WAMCO and Fenaka

The Fuvahmulah City Council has expressed deep concern over the ongoing dismissal of employees from the local branches of the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) and Fenaka Corporation.

In a press statement expressing concern and condemning the actions, the Fuvahmulah City Council stated that it has come to their attention that several employees at the local branches of WAMCO and Fenaka are being abruptly dismissed from their positions.

In a statement, the Fuvahmulah City Council expressed its profound concern and condemned the move in the strongest possible terms, noting that the dismissal of employees abruptly cuts off their livelihoods. The council highlighted that such actions pose significant challenges to the economic and social security of the affected staff and their families.

The statement noted that while measures are being taken under the guise of "right-sizing" companies, employees are being dismissed based on their political affiliations or for not supporting specific ideologies, without regard for their sincerity or performance. The statement further highlighted that these actions contradict President Muizzu’s pledges to ensure job security, as well as the government's stated principles of providing fair and equitable employment opportunities.

Furthermore, the Fuvahmulah City Council stated that the public has raised concerns over the appointment of individuals to high-level political positions following the dismissal of lower-level staff. The council also emphasized that terminating ordinary employees for political reasons, rather than ensuring job security during these challenging economic times, is a violation of the rights of many individuals.

The press release noted that during the Fuvahmulah City Council’s visit to Male' in August, meetings were held with the heads of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). During these discussions, both Fenaka and WAMCO provided assurances that ongoing projects in the city would proceed without interruption. However, the statement expressed concern that despite these guarantees, projects were abruptly halted and discussions regarding dismissals began, suggesting a significant disconnect between the government's promises and its actions.

The Fuvahmulah City Council has called upon state institutions and independent commissions to ensure justice for those being dismissed from their jobs, while further urging the authorities to reinstate the terminated employees.

Reports have been circulating on social media claiming that 51 employees have been dismissed from the Fuvahmulah City branch of Fenaka Corporation.
