Despite the President's pledge not to dismiss employees from non-political positions, the government is facing public backlash following a wave of layoffs across state-owned enterprises. In response to the criticism, the President stated that reducing staff numbers has become a financial necessity to cut corporate costs and emphasized that these redundancies are being carried out in accordance with established procedures.

Ten employees at the Fenaka Corporation branch in GA. Kolamaafushi have been abruptly dismissed from their positions.

According to available information, the dismissed employees include individuals against whom the government has taken various political measures.

While Fenaka Corporation continues to dismiss lower-level staff from its Kolamaafushi and other regional branches, the government is simultaneously appointing individuals to high-ranking political positions with substantial salaries under various titles. Many have pointed out that these actions contradict the government's stated policy of reducing corporate expenditure and implementing austerity measures within state-owned enterprises.

During the 2023 presidential election campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged that no civil servant or state employee would be dismissed from their job, with the exception of those in political appointees. At the time, he emphasized the weight of this commitment, stating he would honor this promise "two hundred times over." However, since assuming office, the administration has acted contrary to these assurances. Various state-owned enterprises have begun terminating a significant number of employees without providing any justification for their dismissal.

Regarding this matter, President Muizzu has stated that downsizing the workforce to essential levels has now become a necessity for state-owned enterprises. The President further clarified that these measures do not constitute a breach of his pledges. He noted that companies may release employees in accordance with their established internal policies and procedures.

When questioned by RaajjeTV regarding the matter, the President stated that the commitment to avoid job terminations does not mean retaining employees "at any cost" regardless of the circumstances. He reiterated that employees are not being dismissed without cause, emphasizing that such actions are carried out in accordance with established policies and procedures.

In recent days, various state-owned enterprises have terminated a significant number of employees, notably including individuals active in opposition political movements. This wave of dismissals has drawn widespread public criticism and sparked significant backlash against the government.
