Operations at Dh. Maaenboodhoo Waste Management Center come to a standstill, leaving facility overgrown with vegetation, reclaimed by wilderness

The Maaenboodhoo Island Council has expressed deep concern over the stalled construction of the island’s waste management center, noting that the site has become overgrown with dense vegetation and fallen into a state of total neglect.

In an interview with RaajjeTV, Maaenboodhoo Council President Nooma Mohamed stated that the project was awarded on October 7, 2024. She further noted that the contract for the work has been commissioned to Apollo.

Nooma stated that the project has remained at a complete standstill since work was halted on August 25, 2025.

As you can observe, banyan trees have begun sprouting between the structures, and the site is gradually transforming into a nursery. We are currently in discussions with the Ministry of Environment regarding this matter. A comprehensive report on the situation has been prepared, and God willing, we will share it with the Ministry of Environment within the coming week.

Nooma stated that the council remains unaware of the reasons behind the project's stagnation, noting that no information has been provided by the Ministry regarding the matter.

Nooma stated that the lack of a proper waste management system in Maaenboodhoo is causing significant challenges, noting that waste is currently being disposed of in an open area.

Waste is currently being dumped in an open area, and while some efforts are being made to segregate it, the public has not fully embraced this management approach. I have observed that waste is still being disposed of in a mixed state. In this modern era of rapid development, whether considering the impact on local businesses or the tourism industry, I believe such practices are fundamentally uncivilized.

Nooma noted that the land for the project has already been designated and handed over to the government, emphasizing that the council has not created any obstacles.
