MP Ibrahim questions HDC MD over delays in operationalizing Hulhumalé mechanical parking systems!

13 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ބުރާސްފަތި 09:59

Member of Parliament Mohamed Ibrahim has requested Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to provide details regarding 10 mechanical parking systems across eight locations in Hulhumalé that have remained idle for seven years, resulting in significant financial losses for the state. Highlighting that the non-operation of these systems—which have a combined capacity for 300 vehicles—has led to an estimated revenue loss of MVR 83 million, the lawmaker sought clarification on the corporation's plans to bring these facilities back into service.

Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), the Member of Parliament for the North Galolhu constituency, has sent a formal letter to Ali Zuhair, the Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), seeking clarification regarding the prolonged disuse of mechanical parking systems installed across various areas of Hulhumalé Phase 1.

Member Ibrahim highlighted that there are 10 mechanical parking systems established across eight different areas in Hulhumalé. He noted that these facilities have remained inaccessible to the public for over seven years.

With a total capacity to accommodate 300 vehicles, these systems have been characterized by Member Ibrahim as a significant waste of resources, noting that they have yielded no benefits to either the public or the state to date.

The member highlighted that if these 300 parking spaces had been leased at a rate of just 100 Rufiyaa per day since 2019, the state would have generated over 83 million Rufiyaa in revenue to date. He noted that the majority of these systems still appear to be in good condition, though one has already been dismantled, with its components currently stored in the vacant lot across from Ocean Front.

Member Ibrahim stated that since Hulhumalé remains under the jurisdiction of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), he wishes to seek further clarification regarding certain matters related to this issue.

The information requested for clarification includes the efforts made to date to make these systems operational, as well as an inquiry into which state institution will be held accountable for the opportunity cost lost due to the prolonged delay in opening the systems for public use. Furthermore, he sought clarification on whether there are any intentions to bring these systems back into service.

In the letter addressed to the Managing Director of HDC, Member Ibrahim also requested clarification on the specific procedures and timelines for how these actions would be implemented, if they were to proceed.
