As the government nears its three-year mark, it is still operating with "L-plates": Shahid

MDP President and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has expressed skepticism over the current administration's ability to lead the nation toward economic independence, asserting that nearly a year into its term, the government continues to operate with an "L-plate" (learner's) approach.

Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program, Shahid stated that the current administration lacks a clear and effective direction for the country’s economic trajectory. He emphasized that as the nation celebrates occasions such as Independence Day, it is vital for Maldivians to refrain from actions that incite division and instead strive for national unity. Furthermore, he noted that reaching consensus through dialogue and differing perspectives is the only way to foster and accommodate new ideas.

Shahid stated that nationalism is not something that can be sustained through mere words or rhetoric, emphasizing that the Maldivian national flag must be hoisted across all locations 24 hours a day. He further noted that it is a profound disrespect to the spirit of nationalism when, after mandating all motorists to display the flag, the national flags on government buildings are left to become worn, faded, and tattered just months or years later.

On this auspicious occasion of National Day, I call upon the government to immediately inspect the flags flying at all state buildings. Any flags that are faded, worn, or torn must be taken down at once. If the government budget cannot currently accommodate the cost of sewing new flags, then they should only be hoisted once replacements are secured. The disrespect shown to our national identity by displaying a faded and tattered flag is far greater than not flying one at all.

Shahid stated that he takes pride in the fact that Maldivians continue to breathe the air of independence despite global turbulence. However, he noted the lack of press freedom in the Maldives and highlighted the ongoing economic challenges facing the nation. He further remarked that it is a source of great satisfaction to see Maldivians who possess the courage to speak the truth regarding the obstacles hindering the country's development.

Shahid further stated that he does not believe the current administration can lead the nation toward economic independence. He attributed this to the fact that, even as the government nears its third year, its top officials still lack a clear understanding of how to govern the state. Critiquing the administration's policies, Shahid remarked that the government is operating with "L-plates" on, suggesting it is still in a learning phase while attempting to manage state affairs.
