Island Aviation Services Limited, operating as Maldivian and serving as the national carrier of the country, has entered a Letter of Intent with De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited to procure two DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G planes.

The formal signing took place during the Farnborough International Airshow held in the United Kingdom.

De Havilland noted that this transaction brings the newest iteration of the model to the Maldives, a region that already contains the largest collection of Twin Otters globally. Twin Otter planes have served as a critical link between the country's islands for many decades. Bringing the Twin Otter Classic 300-G, the most recent updated version of the celebrated plane, to a carrier navigating one of the planet's most demanding flying conditions marks a fresh milestone for Maldivian flight operations.

Ryan DeBrusk, the Vice President of Sales at De Havilland Canada, remarked that the Maldives has earned a global reputation as a primary center for Twin Otter flights. He added that because the country is the biggest global market for these planes, it serves as the ideal setting to unveil the modern generation of the aircraft.

He also mentioned that having Island Aviation become the initial operator of these models in the region solidifies a long-standing collaboration designed to connect the nation's communities and islands.

The Classic 300-G model relies on the established history of dependability and adaptability associated with the aircraft line. According to the manufacturer, the plane includes cutting-edge avionics, improvements to passenger comfort, and simplified maintenance routines tailored to address the changing requirements of current flight operators.

Ibrahim Iyas, the Managing Director of Island Aviation, expressed pride regarding the company becoming the initial airline to bring the Twin Otter Classic 300-G to the nation. He pointed out that Twin Otters have remained an essential component of the local aviation landscape for a long duration, and this updated version, equipped with modern technology and operational refinements, will assist the carrier in delivering the consistent service travelers anticipate.

The manufacturer verified that the Classic 300-G preserves fundamental characteristics depended on by operators, including Short Take-Off and Landing functionality alongside the capacity to function within exceptionally difficult environments. In addition to this, the lighter weight of the plane expands its capacity for carrying passengers and freight while reducing total operational expenses.

Globally, more than 1,000 Twin Otters are actively deployed across varied environments ranging from Arctic areas and mountain ranges to tropical island chains. However, the heaviest concentration of these operating planes continues to be located within the Maldives.
