Government prioritizes holding events for competition rather than executing development projects: Shamheed

MP Dr. Shamheed has criticized the government for prioritizing costly, superficial events over development projects, urging an end to the wasteful expenditure of public funds on unproductive activities during the current economic downturn. He further called for greater fiscal responsibility, demanding that the state budget be managed more effectively to ensure the prudent use of taxpayers' money.

Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumalé constituency, has stated that instead of executing the development projects required by the public, the current administration is witnessing various state institutions competing to host events.

Dr. Shamheed made these remarks while appearing as a guest on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program.

Dr. Shamheed stated that the current state of the government is clearly evident simply by looking at the President's Office website. He noted that instead of seeing the results of government projects, the website is filled with photos and videos of various events being held. However, Shamheed emphasized that none of these activities are producing the actual results required by the public.

The President's Office website appears to be nothing more than a gallery of events, constantly updated with photos and videos. However, none of these activities are producing the actual results that the public requires.

Reflecting on the current operations of various government ministries, Shamheed stated that the situation remains the same across all departments. He noted that as long as grand ceremonies and events are held, the current administration considers its duties fulfilled, even if it fails to provide essential services to the citizens. He described this as a highly irresponsible policy regarding matters tied to the hopes and aspirations of the public.

Furthermore, Dr. Shamheed stated that the government is spending millions from the state budget on every such event it organizes. He emphasized that at a time when the country's economic situation necessitates cost-cutting measures, wasting public funds on such unnecessary ceremonies is entirely unacceptable.

MP Shamheed further noted that the government’s focus remains on prioritizing superficial optics over achieving genuine development. Highlighting that this approach is causing significant damage to the state’s finances, he called on the government to exercise greater responsibility in the utilization of public funds.
