The Hanimaadhoo Island Council has revealed that the construction of a new futsal pitch on the island has come to a standstill. The council stated that work was halted because the project commenced without demarcating boundaries or consulting with local authorities.
Furthermore, the council expressed significant concerns regarding the stalled construction of the island's sports complex and the stadium's rostrum.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Hanimaadhoo Council Vice President Firaq Mohamed stated that the construction of the futsal court was halted because the project commenced without any prior consultation with the council or a proper land survey. He further explained that the perimeter wall of the court was being built directly onto the public road. Upon discovering this encroachment, the council ordered an immediate suspension of the work.
"Look, isn't it fundamentally wrong when an institution's premises encroach upon a public island road? That is a situation that must be rectified. Is this really a failure on the council's part? The adjacent plots are designated for tourism, with lease payments made to the council in US dollars. At this rate, won't we be forced to face them in court tomorrow?"Firaq Mohamed, Vice President of the Hanimaadhoo Island Council
He further stated that the contractor is currently refusing to remove their machinery from the site until they are compensated for the work already completed. The council’s position remains that the project must proceed in accordance with the established boundaries.

In addition to the pitch development, work on the island's sports complex and rostrum has also come to a standstill. According to Council Member Rifga Muna, the sports complex project was contracted to MACL on August 25, 2023, but progress has since stalled.
At the same time, Rifga noted that the construction of the stadium's rostrum, which was contracted to RDC, has shown no progress whatsoever.
This project was officially handed over to MACL on August 25, 2023, and the progress visible today reflects the work completed since then. However, the project appears to have stalled after some initial movement. The construction of the rostrum was contracted to RDC, yet there has been no significant progress on that front. Despite the foundation stone being laid on August 25 last year, the site remains largely unchanged. To date, the only work completed is the installation of corrugated roofing sheets by the Council to create a seating area for dignitaries; beyond that, no further development has taken place.Rifga Muna, Member of the HDh. Hanimaadhoo Island Council
According to the council, the island's development projects are progressing at a very slow pace. The council has expressed concern that work often stalls shortly after a small portion of a project has commenced.
Public concern is mounting as numerous projects launched by the administration in the lead-up to elections have come to a standstill.
