The Honorable Member of Parliament for the North Hithadhoo constituency, Abdulla Sodiq, has stated that the Addu City Council and the People's Majlis must work together to overcome the challenges currently facing the city.
Speaking to RaajjeMV following a meeting with the Addu City Council, MP Sodiq stated that the full cooperation of all members representing Addu in the People's Majlis is essential for the city's overall development. He further noted that a decision has been made to establish a robust framework to facilitate this collaborative effort.
During the meeting held on Sunday, discussions focused on ways to resume stalled development projects in Addu City. The two parties also deliberated on collaborative efforts to further the overall development of the city.
Discussions focused on addressing public concerns and establishing mechanisms to expedite the resumption of currently stalled projects. In addition to Addu City Deputy Mayor Mohamed Shuau, several council members participated in the meeting.
As President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration approaches its third year, the developmental vision for Addu City appears to have stalled. Projects initiated by the previous MDP administration have come to a standstill, while significant challenges continue to plague the redevelopment of Gan International Airport—the economic backbone of the region. Reports indicate that the project management consultant, STUP, is signaling an intent to halt operations as their contract remains unrenewed.
Furthermore, the government made numerous pledges regarding the development of Addu City during the presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections. However, to date, very few of these projects have transitioned into the practical implementation phase.
