Government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) has stated that the administration will investigate allegations of intimidation directed at government critics living in Sri Lanka during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit. These remarks follow claims by several individuals residing in the country that they were targeted and threatened in connection with the President's trip.
Shareef made these remarks while speaking at a press conference held on Thursday. He stated that the High Commission has been instructed to investigate the matter, noting that these directives were issued as soon as he was informed of the incident.
"We are looking into it. Yes, we are investigating the matter. We have already instructed the High Commission to look into it as well. I began receiving information about the incident while the event was still ongoing that night. The High Commissioner was present at the venue at the time, and when I asked him about what was happening, he stated categorically that it was a lie. You are welcome to contact him directly; we expect him to provide a response if you reach out."Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu)
Shareef stated that neither the government nor the President had issued any directives or taken any action to prevent specific individuals from attending the President's meeting.
When RaajjeTV initially questioned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the matter, a ministry official stated that they had not received any such information. The official added that they would look into the issue. However, the Ministry has not provided any further updates on the matter since then.
