Public openly rejects attacks being launched by PNC and government against Constitution and the nation's democratic framework; it is time to change course: Meekail
MP Meekail stated that instead of debating the proposed amendment to the Land Act, which seeks to grant land rights to children of deceased parents, government members are focused on seeking political gain. He further noted that the public has already rejected the government's current policies and what he described as ongoing attacks on the Constitution.

MP for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has stated that the public has openly rejected the ongoing attacks by the PNC and the government against the Constitution and the nation's constitutional framework.
The remarks were made during Monday's parliamentary sitting during the debate on a proposed amendment to the Land Act. The amendment seeks to establish a legal framework allowing for the inheritance of state-owned land by orphaned children.
"Maimulhavun" refers to a legal circumstance in inheritance where the children of a daughter are excluded from receiving a share of their grandparents' estate. This situation arises when a daughter passes away during the lifetime of her own father or mother, leaving behind children of her own. The term is applied in this specific context because, upon the subsequent death of the grandparents, the deceased daughter's children are legally barred from inheriting directly from their grandparents' assets.
The matter was submitted to Parliament by Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), the MDP Member of Parliament for the North Galolhu constituency.
Speaking on the amendment, Meekail noted that while parliamentary sittings have resumed following the general election, the mindset of government-aligned members remains unchanged. He highlighted that despite the MDP proposing an amendment to the Land Act to address the challenges faced by heirs of deceased estate owners, pro-government members have focused on seeking political leverage rather than engaging in a meaningful debate on the issue.
Meekail stated that PNC members of parliament are now coming forward to defend policies that the Maldivian people have explicitly rejected. He further noted that the public has also voiced its opposition to the ongoing attacks by the PNC and the government against the Constitution and the country's legal framework.
Consequently, Meekail emphasized that the government's next course of action should be to revise these policies and implement necessary reforms.
We are once again witnessing PNC members of Parliament stepping out to defend policies that the public has already rejected and explicitly said "no" to. The people of this country have consistently voiced their opposition to the attacks being launched against the Constitution and the legal framework of the Maldives by the PNC and the government. Mr. Speaker, when 70 percent of the public turns out for a local council election and says "no," that is a definitive rejection. Therefore, the government must accept this reality and change its policies accordingly.Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency.
Meekail further stated that the public is deeply dissatisfied with the government's actions and the direction of its policies thus far. He specifically noted that the people have now rejected the conduct of PNC members, who he claimed have acted merely as puppets of the administration.
