The High Court has scheduled the first hearing for Monday night in a case filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office seeking to formally designate "Scoop," a group operating in Hithadhoo, Addu City, as an organized crime group or criminal gang.
The Prosecutor General’s Office filed the case with the High Court on January 15 of this year. Although the initial hearing for the case was scheduled for February, it was subsequently canceled.
The hearing is currently scheduled for Monday night at 21:15. The presiding bench consists of Judge Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla, Judge Abdul Maaniu Hussain, and Judge Ibrahim Mahir.
The Prosecutor General’s Office filed this case in court following a thorough review of the evidence and recommendations submitted by the police. According to the PG Office, the "Scoop" group meets the legal criteria to be classified as an "organized crime group" under the Act on Prohibiting Gang-related Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes. The PG Office further noted that the group appears to be currently and actively engaged in criminal activities.
Furthermore, authorities have requested that nine individuals identified as associates of the group be formally designated as its members. This marks the second instance where the police have petitioned the Prosecutor General’s Office to legally declare a specific group as a criminal gang since the enactment of the new Gang Violence Prevention Act.
