The dismissal of Ismail Sajid, the head of the Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), has been submitted to the Employment Tribunal.
Sajid filed this case on February 4, 2026.
Sajid was dismissed from his position on January 29, 2026, following allegations of sexual harassment. His removal was ordered by Governor Ahmed Munawwar, based on the recommendations of an internal committee at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) that investigated the matter. Sajid had previously been suspended from his role as the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) on December 25, 2025.
Sajid has denied the allegations leveled against him. In a social media post, he further asserted that the investigation conducted by the MMA committee was carried out in violation of the law.
Sajid was appointed as the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in August last year.
Sajid was appointed to the position as part of what was described as a structural change, replacing the former head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Abdulla Ashraf. His appointment came within 24 hours of the leak of an FIU report containing serious allegations against the Member of Parliament for the Baarashu constituency, Ibrahim Shujau.
