Ismail Sajid, the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), who had been under suspension since late 2025, has been dismissed from his post.
The dismissal was finalized on Thursday following allegations of sexual harassment. The decision to remove him from office was taken by Governor Ahmed Munawwar, acting on the recommendation of an internal committee at the central bank that investigated the allegations.
Sajid was suspended from his position as head of the FIU on 25 December 2023.
Sajid was appointed to the role after structural changes within the institution, replacing former FIU head Abdulla Ashraf. His appointment occurred within 24 hours of the leak of an FIU report containing serious allegations against MP for Baarah constituency Ibrahim Shujau.
FIU is a statutory body established under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act. Its primary mandate is the monitoring and oversight of financial transactions to detect and prevent criminal activity linked to illicit financial flows.
