Ali Hashim has been sacked from his position as the Governor of the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The President’s Office on Monday revealed that the People’s Majlis had recommended the dismissal of Hashim as Governor to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as per the authority vested to him under the Maldives Monetary Authority Act.

The office has confirmed his dismissal from the post.

Further, President Muizzu has forwarded the appointment of Ahmed Munawwar as the Governor of MMA for parliamentary approval, under Article 6 (III) of the Maldives Monetary Authority Act.

Ahmed Munawwar has previously served as the Minister of Finance and currently fills the position of Advisor to the Minister of Finance.

The People’s Majlis greenlighted recommending the dismissal of Hashim as MMA’s Governor, during the parliament sitting held on Monday.

During the vote taken to approve the recommending of Hashim’s dismissal to the president, 63 members voted in favor with only nine lawmakers against.

The Committee on Public Account at the People’s Majlis voted in favor of recommending the dismissal of Governor Hashim on July 17.

All of the lawmakers that attended the committee meeting unanimously voted to recommend the dismissal of the central bank’s governor, to President Muizzu.

The former governor failed to present himself to the Public Accounts Committee for questioning and had informed the parliament in writing, that he was unable to attend citing health-related issues.

Former Governor Hashim is to have revealed that the island nation is facing an economic crisis due to non-compliance of instructions given to the government, and not because the relevant information was not shared.

A no-confidence motion against Hashim was submitted by Deputy Speaker, MP for Dhiggaru constituency Ahmed Nazim, who has alleged that Hashim has failed to perform his duties as the head of the central bank of Maldives.

Hashim was summoned to the committee to respond to the motion several times and he failed to do so.

Lawmakers voted to recommend his dismissal as they believe he is incompetent in carrying out his role responsibly.

He was appointed as MMA’s governor on 8 September 2019 during the administration of now opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Previously having served as Minister of Finance, Hashim held his ministerial position from 2008 to 2010 during MDP’s first rule.
