Mohamed “Rukuma” Abdul Kareem, Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Maldive Gas, has officially resigned from his position to join another state-owned company.
This marks the fourth time Rukuma has been reassigned to different government entities under the current administration.
Following the change in government, he was initially appointed DMD of the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), before being transferred in late August 2024 to the position of DMD at Fenaka Corporation.
The reasons for these frequent administrative shifts have not been clarified.
Rukuma first gained political prominence through the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), serving as a member of the Malé City Council and representing the South Henveiru constituency in the People’s Majlis.
He contested the MDP primary for the 2019 parliamentary elections, however, after an unsuccessful bid, ran in the general election as an independent candidate.
In 2021, Rukuma officially joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which was the opposition party at the time.
His resignation from Maldive Gas continues a pattern of high-profile administrative movements under the current government.
