Renowned film director Abdul Faththah has passed away abruptly.
RaajjeMV understands that he passed away on 30 December 2025.
According to his family, Faththah was taken to Dhidhdhoo Hospital on Tuesday evening after experiencing chest pain while he was in Kelaa island of Haa Alif atoll.
Reports indicate that Faththah was rushed to Dhidhdhoo as an emergency case after initially receiving treatment at the Kelaa Health Center.
Born on 6 December 1971, Faththah was a highly respected and popular Maldivian film director, producer, editor, screenwriter and choreographer.
Widely regarded as one of the most successful filmmakers in Maldivian cinema, he received numerous accolades throughout his career, including four National Film Awards and two Maldives Film Awards.
In recognition of his contributions to the film industry, the Maldivian government honored him with a National Award in 2004.
After winning an inter-office teledrama competition, Faththah made his directorial debut in the film industry with a video single. In 2000, he directed his first feature film, “Himeyn Dhuniye”, which was followed by “Ranmuiy”.
He rose to prominence in Maldivian cinema with the 2002-commercially successful and widely noted romantic drama, as well as the horror film “Eynaa” (2004).
He later directed the award-winning “Vehey Vaarey Therein” (2003), which earned him the National Film Award for Best Director.
After establishing his own production studio, Red Productions, Faththah went on to direct a renowned television drama series “Hinithun Velaashey Kalaa” and the romantic drama “Vaa Loabi Engeynama” (2006).
His most successful film was the romantic horror “Jinni” (2010), which earned him a nomination for Best Director at the Maldives Film Awards.
He subsequently directed another romantic horror film, “14 Vileyrey” (2011).
Faththah’s romantic film “Loabi Story” (2012) garnered him a second nomination for the National Film Award for Best Director. His subsequent film, the family drama “Aadheys” (2014), received mixed reviews from critics, while the commercially successful “Hahdhu: (2017) was released alongside his announcement of retirement from the film industry.
