The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has launched a special maritime operation focused on inspecting sea vessels for compliance with licensing and safety regulations.

According to MNDF, the operation was initiated in response to a rise in incidents involving unlicensed vessels and non-compliance with maritime safety requirements. These violations have contributed to increasing risks to both passengers and crew, prompting authorities to step up enforcement.

The operation includes comprehensive inspections to ensure vessels meet the safety standards outlined in their certification. Checks will cover a range of areas, including the presence and functionality of marine VHF radios, the validity of the captain's operating license, and other critical safety and security measures intended to protect passengers and crew.

MNDF Area Commands will carry out inspections at various island harbors, focusing on vessels entering and departing these areas. The operation is intended to ensure adherence to all relevant maritime laws and to implement necessary corrective actions where violations are found. MNDF has also acknowledged the public's cooperation in supporting maritime safety efforts.

While MNDF has not disclosed the duration of the operation, it is notable that this initiative was not launched during the recent school break or holiday period, times when such operations are typically conducted.

The timing of the operation is particularly significant, as it coincides with the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) upcoming rally scheduled for October 3. A large number of participants are expected to travel from the atolls to the capital Malé City for the event, making vessel traffic unusually high during this period.
