The victim in the stabbing incident in Maavah was identified as Moosa Ibrahim, 29, (R) and the suspect was identified as Mohamed Ibrahim, 29, (L).

The Prosecutor General's Office has formally filed intentional homicide charges against Mohamed Ibrahim, 29, of Nolhivaranfaru island in Haa Dhaal atoll, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Moosa Ibrahim on the island of Maavah in Laamu atoll.

The charges, submitted to the Criminal Court on September 25, stem from a violent incident that occurred on the morning of July 28, when Moosa Ibrahim, a resident of Nalahiya, L. Maavah, was fatally stabbed in the neck near the island's volleyball court. The suspect, Mohamed Ibrahim, was reportedly visiting the island at the time.

Prosecutors have brought two charges against him: the first for intentional homicide using a sharp object under the law prohibiting intimidation and possession of dangerous weapons, and the second for unlawfully carrying a sharp object in a public place without valid justification.

PG Office highlighted that the case is part of ongoing efforts to fast-track the investigation and prosecution of serious violent crimes. Authorities highlighted that the case was closely coordinated with the Maldives Police Service (MPS) from the early stages of the investigation.

Police officers recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack from, the sea. The suspect has remained in custody since the incident and is currently detained pending trial.

While official statements have yet to confirm a motive, information gathered so far suggests the stabbing may have taken place during a drug-related dispute, a detail that, if confirmed, would underscore persistent concerns about the link between violent crime and the country’s ongoing drug issues.

Some people from the island who spoke about the incident have stated that both individuals were known to use and trade in drugs.
