Residents of Veyvah island in Meemu atoll have raised serious concerns over several long-promised development projects that remain stalled, urging President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to take immediate action to resolve the prolonged delays.

During a community meeting held at Veyvah School as part of the president’s tour, island council members and residents detailed a range of unresolved issues and unmet development needs.

These included calls for the construction of sports facilities, improved infrastructure to support tourism, new housing initiatives, and urgent expansion of the island’s overcrowded school.

One of the most pressing concerns raised was the sewerage project, which has remained incomplete for years. Multiple residents demanded transparency from the government, asking for a clear timeline for completion and an explanation for the prolonged delays. Several speakers described the island’s overall development as having regressed, a sentiment echoed by the Council President.

In response to this, Muizzu acknowledged the residents’ frustrations and pledged to fast-track the island’s development. He announced that the island’s long-awaited harbor development project will be included in the 2026 national budget, while efforts to address the school’s space issues would be completed before the start of the next academic year.

He also committed to beginning the development of sports facilities and the upgrading of the health center within this year.

Further, the president assured residents that his administration aims to complete all previously stalled projects by the end of this year or early next year.

Despite these assurances, many residents remain skeptical, having heard similar promises in the past with little to no tangible progress on the ground.
