One person has been confirmed dead after a boat named ‘Leo’ capsized near Thulusdhoo island of Kaafu atoll on Tuesday night.

RaajjeMV understands that the deceased is a man from Kudarikilu Island in Baa atoll. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s Malé Area Second Squadron launched immediate rescue operations following the incident.

Officials confirmed that six individuals were onboard ‘Leo’ at the time of the capsizing. Five of them were successfully rescued, while one was found unresponsive. According to the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the victim was already deceased upon arrival at Kaafu Atoll Hospital.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. This tragedy comes amid a period of worsening weather conditions across the Maldives, during which maritime accidents have become increasingly frequent.

The MNDF and other relevant agencies have once again urged the public to exercise caution and strictly follow safety protocols when traveling by sea.
