As part of the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced restrictions on land vehicle operations in the Greater Malé Region (GMR) during specific hours.

According to the official statement released on Thursday, land vehicles will be prohibited from operating at designated times on July 25, 26, and 27. The move aims to ensure the smooth conduct of Independence Day events, enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and support security measures.

The ministry highlighted that these temporary restrictions are necessary to maintain order and facilitate a secure and enjoyable celebration for all.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has provided further details on the vehicle operation restrictions during the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations.

As such, on July 25, heavy vehicles classified under categories C0, C2, D, E, and V will be prohibited from operating between 1pm and 6pm. On July 26, all types of land vehicles will be restricted from operating between 3pm and 6:30pm. On July 27, the same categories of heavy vehicles (C0, C2, D, E, and V) will face operational restrictions from 6pm until midnight.

These measures are designed to ensure public safety, minimize traffic congestion, and facilitate smooth conduct of Independence Day events across the Greater Malé area.

The Ministry of Transport has clarified that certain vehicles will be exempt from the operation restrictions during the designated prohibited hours.

Motorized land vehicles used by security forces, ambulances, and public transportation buses will be allowed to operate uninterrupted to ensure essential services remain active during the Independence Day celebrations.

The Ministry also warned that violations of these restrictions will be dealt with firmly under Articles 67 and 68 of the Land Transport Act, underscoring its commitment to enforcing the directive for public safety and smooth event operations.
