Fenaka’s Deputy MD appointed as Deputy MD of Maldive Gas

Mohamed “Rukuma” Abdul Kareem, who held the position of Deputy Managing Director at Fenaka Corporation Limited, has been transferred to the position of Deputy Managing Director at Maldive Gas.

This is the third time he has been transferred to a different company since the incumbent administration took office. When the government first came to power, he was initially appointed as the DMD of WAMCO, the waste management company. However, towards the end of August 2024, he was transferred to the position of DMD at Fenaka.

In connection with his appointment as the Deputy Managing Director of Maldive Gas, Mohamed Abdul Kareem has resigned from the position of DMD at Fenaka.

According to available information, he was appointed to the position of DMD at Maldive Gas on June 23.

The reason for the transfer remains unclear. However, at the time of the move, both the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the State Trading Organization (STO) were investigating missing advance payments made by Maldive Gas for a gas shipment. Details of the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.

Mohamed Abdul Kareem gained prominence in the political sphere through the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). As such, he has served as a member of the Malé City Council and as an MP for South Henveiru constituency on an MDP ticket.

During the previous MDP government, he contested in the MDP primary for the 2019 parliamentary elections. However, he was unsuccessful in the primary. He then ran for the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. The election was won by Hussain Shaheem, who ran on the MDP ticket.

Later, in 2021, Mohamed Abdul Kareem joined the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), which was then in opposition.
