The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed the arrest of a motorcyclist who fled the scene after striking a pedestrian.
On Saturday, the police institution revealed that they had apprehended a person who fled without stopping after hitting a pedestrian crossing at the zebra crossing in front of the ION store on Nirolhumagu, Hulhumalé Phase 1.
The accident was reported to the police at approximately 02:10pm on June 16.
The police institution noted that the victim of the accident is a 54-year-old Maldivian man who sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
According to the police institution, the arrested individual is Mohamed Nashiu, 20, from Maamendhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll. He was the driver of the motorcycle involved in the accident. The police also stated that he did not possess a valid motorcycle driving license.
Further, the police reported that on June 19, he was arrested under a court order and presented before the court for a remand hearing. The court ordered him to be remanded in custody for six days.
Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case.
