Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has emphasized the urgent need to plant more trees and increase green spaces across the capital, highlighting their importance in reducing the city’s rising temperatures.

Mayor Azim said this during an event held to plant trees at "Maafannu Maizaan" which is being developed by the Malé City Council, in Maafannu district of the congested capital city.

Mayor Adam Azim noted that Malé has consistently experienced high temperatures, and addressing this issue is a key priority for the city council. As part of its efforts, the council is focusing on developing public squares and increasing tree coverage to create a greener urban environment.

The mayor emphasized that these green spaces not only help cool the city but also offer significant psychological benefits. “When people walk through Malé and see greenery, even from a distance, it brings a sense of calm and happiness,” he said, adding that the simple presence of trees can foster a feeling of contentment among residents.

Mayor Adam Azim highlighted that the area surrounding Maafannu Maizaan which is currently under development, is one of the most congested parts of Malé. Given the narrowness of the nearby alleys, he stated that the city council is considering relocating parked motorcycles from these alleys to a designated motorcycle zone being established at Maafannu Maizaan.

The proposal, which will be discussed in an upcoming council meeting, aims to improve access for emergency vehicles, particularly ambulances transporting patients, by ensuring clearer and more navigable pathways.

Mayor Adam Azim emphasized that these major changes in Malé are being implemented with the sincere intention of enhancing residents' well-being and creating a more livable urban environment. He added that council members are offering their full support and cooperation in advancing these initiatives.

A total of 40 trees were planted during the event, featuring species such as banyan, sea almond, and mango trees.

Upon completion of Maafannu Maizaan, plans include the construction of a three-on-three basketball court in the southwest corner, currently occupied by a parking zone. In addition to this, a new bus stop pocket will be developed on Majeedhee Magu to help ease traffic congestion. The project also features a designated parking area for 295 motorcycles, a green space reserved for ceremonies and events, and a 496-square-foot exercise area.

Work has commenced on a new public square spanning 36,153 square feet in Maafannu. Mayor Adam Azim expressed confidence that the development will significantly enhance the daily lives of residents in the area.

The project is underway following the complete clearing of the land previously occupied by the Maafannu Cemetery.
