The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has shared information with the European Parliament regarding the unlawful dismissal of Supreme Court judges.

MDP’s President Abdulla Shahid met with Şerban-Dimitrie Sturdza, Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia, and shared information about the challenges facing the judicial system of the Maldives. MP for South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem accompanied Shahid at the meeting.

During the meeting held in Brussels, Belgium, in addition to concerns about the judiciary, information about other issues in the Maldives’ political sphere was also shared with the EU Parliament's South Asia Delegation. During his visit to Brussels, Shahid will also meet with other EU officials.

Before traveling to Brussels, Shahid met with some members of the British Parliament in London and also with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. During the meeting, concerns about the efforts being made by the current administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to hijack the judicial system were shared with the Commonwealth of Nations.

In addition to former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current MDP President Shahid, MP Meekail and former MP Hussain Shaheem of South Henveiru constituency participated in the meeting.

Shahid met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland as well. Taking to social media platform ‘X’ following the meeting, Shahid said that President Muizzu's government is attacking the judiciary, hijacking parliamentary checks and balances, suppressing independent commissions and media, and that the government is violating the constitution.

Further, Shahid said he shared information about the youth protests against the current government's oppression.
