Meekail calls 19th Majlis’ failure to repeal assembly law “a major blunder”
Parliament failed to repeal the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act which has enabled ongoing prosecutions of protesters including taxi drivers and MDP demonstrators

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s MP for South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem has described the 19th People’s Majlis assembly’s failure to repeal the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, despite the party’s supermajority, as a major mistake.
During a debate on a bill to repeal the law, which restricts assembly in certain areas without prior permission, Meekail argued that parliament mishandled an earlier repeal attempt submitted by former MP for Kaashidhoo constituency Abdulla Jabir, allowing it to stagnate for an extended period.
He observed that political parties rarely acknowledge their own errors, but insisted that they must work collectively to safeguard the rights of the public. He said citizens expect parliament to undertake work that genuinely protects their rights.
Meekail noted that the continued existence of the Act has enabled ongoing prosecutions, including cases against individuals arrested during the taxi drivers’ protest and two youths detained in connection with a protest over Yameen Rasheed’s case. He added that efforts were also underway to prosecute those arrested following the mass MDP protest on October 3, with a deadline set for November 18.
The law, passed on 17 August 2016, under former President Abdulla Yameen, prohibits gathering in any location without prior permission, except in areas designated by the home ministry.
