MDP condemns dismissal of two party members from WAMCO

Two MDP members were sent termination letters on April 30

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly condemned the dismissal of two party members from their jobs in connection with the party's recent trip to southernmost Addu City last week.

In a press release, MDP stated that Moosa Mohamed, who was working as a manager at the Hithadhoo branch of Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), a 100 percent government-owned company, and Mohamed Afzal, who was working as a Senior Administrative Officer, were sent termination letters on April 30.

MDP says that participating in political activities is a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives to every Maldivian citizen, and dismissing employees for participating in such activities is clear evidence of the extreme job insecurity that currently exists in the country.

As May Day is celebrated on May 1 to advocate for workers' rights, MDP has called on all workers to join their May Day Rally and protest across the country against the government's violation of workers' rights and the hardship imposed on many families.
