The family of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed who allegedly “fell” from the ninth floor of a house in the capital Malé City on April 18, has confirmed the success of a high-risk neck surgery.

Mohamed Moomin, Yumnu’s brother in law, took to social media platform ‘X’ on behalf of the family, confirming that Yumnu had undergone a high-risk surgery for her broken neck on Tuesday.

She was reportedly wheeled into the operation theatre at 3pm on Tuesday and according o the family, the surgery that lasted for five hours was successful.

Moomin revealed that the lower part of Yumnu's neck was broken.

He added that the surgery was performed to treat the fragmented fracture in C7 (the spine bone at the lower part of the neck). Moomin wrote that this was the most critical and dangerous surgery she had to face and that it went smoothly.

According to Moomin, there will not be any more surgeries like this and that if all goes well, Yumnu might even be able to sit up in a few days.

The family has stated that Yumnu was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after the surgery, and cited doctors having revealed that Yumnu's condition will improve swiftly.

Yumnu suffered severe injuries in the fall, including a broken chest bone, collarbone, and serious injuries to the muscles.

Yumnu is receiving treatment for her injuries in Malaysia. Many people have been raising their voices to seek justice for the injuries Yumnu sustained in the “fall”. In addition to this, many members of the public have been expressing dissatisfaction with how the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating Yumnu's case.

Further, the family has also called for the dismissal of Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Samih from the investigation for repeatedly providing false information regarding the incident.

Samih is the head of the Homicide Investigation Unit of the Maldives Police Service (MPS), which handles murder cases. In the first press conference held by the police, which was only for journalists, Samih had tried to steer the focus of the case in a certain direction. While revealing information about Yumnu at the meeting, he concealed information about suspects in the case and those in government political positions related to the incident, as well as those connected to them.

The family has stated that false information was repeatedly provided to them regarding the investigation. Yumnu was found on the roof of H. Mithaaz in the early hours of April 18, injured beyond recognition and “left for dead” by a group of other young adults with her earlier that day.
