Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, 21, who fell from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoy in the early hours of April 18, has been flown to Malaysia for further treatment.
Yumnu’s family left for Malaysia at 9pm on Saturday. They departed with MVR 385,500 arranged by the government and more than MVR 650,000 donated by the public from an online fundraising event and other means.
Yumnu was found on the roof of an adjacent warehouse after falling from the ninth floor of H. Fentenoy in the capital, Malé City.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case.
The police have stated that their investigation indicates that she was not pushed by someone and initially revealed that she “fell on her own”.
The passports and mobile phones of everyone who was with Yumnu on the night of the incident have been confiscated. A total of nine young adults were with Yumnu the night of the incident.
In connection with the case, Raud Ahmed Zilal, 21, of G. Eriyadhoo, who was with her at the time, has since been arrested. When presented to the Criminal Court for a remand hearing, he was remanded for five days.
The court order states that there was a dispute between Raud and Yumnu earlier that night, before the incident.
The police also told the court that shortly after the time Yumnu is believed to have fallen, when asked about Yumnu's whereabouts, Raud is to have said that he didn't know and that she “might have fallen”.
When police requested the court order for Raud's arrest, they alleged that he was suspected of being involved in Yumnu's fall. They also accused him of being intoxicated at the time of the incident. Raud also faces allegations of attempted sexual assault.
