The man who was critically injured in a fire in Rasdhoo island of Alif Alif atoll, has been taken off ventilator support.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, a media official from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) revealed that the surviving victim has been taken off the ventilator, but is still receiving treatment in the ICU.
A health professional said it was difficult to say anything specific about the young man's condition. This is because it will take a long time for the condition to improve, as a majority of the man’s body has been burned. He also said that treatment is being provided in a severely critical condition.
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) received the report of the fire incident at 11:15pm on March 24.
They were brought to the capital Malé City for emergency treatment that night. The family stressed, quoting doctors, that with 83 percent of the woman's body and 78 percent of the man's body burned, survival was unlikely.
According to information received, the couple has a five-year-old child. However, the child was not in the room at the time of the fire incident. The cause of the fire incident remains unclear.
Dr. Shailesh V. Ranade, a Burns and Plastic Surgeon from Bhatia Hospital in Mumbai, India, was flown in on March 27 to provide advice on the treatment of the couple.
The woman succumbed to her injuries on March 31, while receiving treatment on ventilator support.
When she was transferred to the capital Malé City for extensive treatment following the incident that occurred on the night of March 24 in Rasdhoo, a majority of her body was already burned. Even then, doctors had given up hope, according to information provided by the family.
The cause of the fire incident remains unclear.
Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case.
