Inmate hangs himself to death in Maafushi Prison

An inmate has hanged himself to death in Maafushi Prison.
According to information provided by the Maldives Correctional Service, the deceased has been identified as Ibrahim Shamveel, 23, native to Maradhoo island of Seenu atoll.
Corrections stated that Ibrahim Shamveel was found hanging in his cell around 4:20pm on March 23. They also said that he was immediately rushed to Maafushi Hospital. Corrections went on to reveal that doctors declared him dead at 4:55pm, March 23.
Shamveel was serving a sentence of one year and six months for threatening to harm someone's life and potentially carrying out such an act.
In connection with the inmate’s death, Corrections revealed that they had immediately notified the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the inmate’s family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
