The residence of former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, who was dismissed from his position on suspicion of taking money from foreigners by abusing his official influence, has been raided.
The search of M. Silver Line, where Shamaan resides, located in the alley next to Slimfitting shop on Fareedhee Magu, was conducted around 12am on Friday. The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has not disclosed if they searched any other houses besides Shamaan's residence.
The police institution went on to state that they have been investigating the matter after receiving information that some Immigration employees were abusing their official influence to obtain undue benefits from foreign workers. The police institution revealed late Thursday that they had conducted an operation linked to this case, during which they searched a residence and took three people into custody.
Shamaan was also dismissed from his position on Thursday in connection with the case of some Immigration employees abusing their official influence to obtain undue benefits from foreign workers. Shamaan's photo has been removed from the list of state officials on the President's Office website as well. However, the government has not yet disclosed any information related to this matter.
However, at around 3:35am on Friday, Retired Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh was appointed to the position to replace Shamaan.
