The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has sent a summons notice to Mohamed Shamin, who is actively involved in the ongoing serial protests by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Shamin has been summoned to the police institution, in connection with the main opposition party’s protests.
The summons sent by the police to Shamin on Thursday states that he should appear at the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building at 2pm on Saturday.
The summons sent to Shamin states that he is suspected of gathering in various areas of Malé City on the night of 10 March 2025, protesting loudly in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, obstructing public transportation and businesses, interfering with police duties, disobeying police orders, as well as obstructing police work.
The summons notice stated that Shamin is being called in for questioning and to take a statement regarding these allegations. It also mentions that the statement-collecting process is expected to take two hours.
While Shamin has been summoned to the police in connection with the protests, former MP for Makunudhoo constituency Mohamed Raee has also been previously summoned to the police. In addition to this, former Managing Director of the Road Development Corporation (RDC), Moosa Ali Manik, has also been sent a summons to appear before the police. All these individuals have been summoned with the same allegations.
In connection with the peaceful protests being carried out by the MDP, protesters allege that the police have been obstructing participants every night, using excessive force, and inflicting numerous injuries on protesters.
The peaceful protests are calling for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to fulfill his campaign promise of handing over flats and land plots to those who have been allocated plots of land and flats.
