MP Ali Moosa speaking at the Parliament session

MP for Hoarafushi constituency Ali Moosa, appeared confused about the topic being discussed by parliamentarians at the People’s Majlis on Monday.

During Monday morning's parliament sitting, MP Ali Moosa raised a point of order while MP for Kendhoo constituency Maroof Zakir was speaking.

MP Ali Moosa said that today was a day to grieve, noting that it was apparent that a major political party was speaking about a report without conducting any research or reviewing its contents whatsoever. As he continued speaking, highlighting the appointment of the Election Commission's Vice President, the Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who was presiding over the sitting, interrupted the lawmaker.

Today is truly a day we should deeply regret. From the way this person speaks about a report from a major political party, we can clearly see they are speaking without conducting any research or reading anything in it. We are actually trying to determine the Vice President of the Elections Commission today. They mentioned once about the President and Vice President. In other countries, this is done...”
Hoarafushi MP Ali Moosa

Abdul Raheem highlighted that it cannot be considered as a procedural point, and that one lawmaker cannot be given the opportunity to respond to another lawmaker’s speech. Referring to the ongoing topic, Abdul Raheem said that they are not working on appointing someone to the position of Vice President of the Elections Commission, but rather proceeding with the work of appointing someone as the Vice President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Honorable Member. I do not accept this as a point of order. I cannot give an opportunity for one member to respond to what another member says. The work being done is to appoint someone as the Vice President of ACC, not as the Vice President of the Election Commission.”
Speaker of the People's Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla

At the time, the discussion was proceeding on the report submitted by the Independent Institutions Committee regarding the President's nomination of the Anti-Corruption Commission's Vice President to the Parliament, in accordance with Article 7(b) of Law No. 13/2008 (Anti-Corruption Commission Act).

However, the comments made by Hoarafushi MP Ali Moosa, claiming it to be a point of order, have drawn criticism from many people.
