Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won the by-election for the council seat for Kamadhoo island on Baa atoll.

MDP's Ahmed Saajid won the seat over Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Ali Naaiz, despite the PPM candidate winning more votes in the capital Malé City.

While 110 individuals voted in Malé; Naaiz won 58 votes, while Saajid took 51 votes. There was one invalid vote.

118 individuals voted in Kamadhooo, Naaiz took 84 votes while Saajid got 118 votes. There were two invalid votes.

Hence, MDP's Saajid wins the seat with a total of 169 votes to Naaiz's 142 votes.

The Kamadhoo island council seat became vacant after council member Ali Mausoom resigned two days after taking oath. The Local Council Elections, initially scheduled for January 2017, was held on 6th May.
