The People’s Majlis has greenlighted the appointment of Abdul Haseeb Ismail as a member of the Elections Commission (EC).

The appointment was approved by the parliament on Tuesday.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu sent the name of Abdul Haseeb Ismail, who was serving as the Assistant Director of the Commission, to the parliament on October 14.

The government opened the opportunity to apply for a vacancy at the commission as the tenure of a current member is set to expire.

As such, EC President Fuwad Thaufeeq’s term is set to expire on November 23. The term for an EC member is five years and any individual can serve a maximum of two terms.

After the Independent Institutions Committee of the People’s Majlis decided to appoint Abdul Haseeb and submitted the report to the parliament, his name was approved unanimously by all 67 members who took part in the vote.

Abdul Haseeb Ismail was appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Islamic Ministry during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

However, he was suspended and later dismissed from the position following allegations of harsh treatment towards some ministry employees as well as other issues.

Abdul Haseeb Ismail held the position of Assistant Director at the Elections Commission, earlier. He joined the commission on 2 January 2022.

He has also worked in the finance ministry.
