A decision on charges to be filed against the three suspects involved in the fatal accident near Vinares Flat in Hulhumalé Phase II, is to be reached within this week.

This was revealed by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) in response to a question posed by RaajjeMV.

As such, Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafeeu revealed that the Maldives Police Service (MPS) filed the chargesheet against the three suspects implicated in the case, in mid-September and that the PG Office accepted the case on September 14.

Shafeeu added that the PG Office has not decided on the chargesheet yet and that a decision would be reached before September 29.

The suspects initially arrested in connection with the case are Ikram-ul Rahman and Ibrahim Ikram native to capital Malé City as well as Jinah Ismail, native to Kanduhulhudhoo island of Gaaf Alif atoll.

The accident took place after a speeding car lost control and crashed into a motorcycle rider, waiting on the side of the road on his bike, on July 31.

According to the police institution, the driver of the car initially fled the scene after the crash.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested under a court order, later.

A video showing how the accident unfolded circulated on social media.

Stressing that the car involved in the crash was a racing car, several poured their concerns regarding the issue of racing on the roads of the suburbs on social media.

Upon impact, the motorcycle rider was seen thrown into a distance. A plant near the sidewalk also uprooted upon impact.

Another motorcycle parked in the region was also damaged.

An eyewitness told RaajjeMV that the victim of the accident, a 27-year-old Maldivian, attained serious injuries while the three inside the car, left the scene unscathed.

The person driving the car was recently remanded.

Ibrahim Ikram was initially arrested in connection with the fatal accident on July 31 and later released by the High Court. The Criminal Court initially remanded one of the suspects for 15 days on August 1 and the remaining two were remanded pending the end of their trial.

Ikram, who was driving the car involved in the crash, appealed his remand pending sentencing, at the High Court.

The court nullified the order on the grounds that he was detained in the case without being entitled to legal assistance.

On September 1, Ikram walked free. He was later arrested.

Following public criticism, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan assured that if there was any negligence on the part of the police institution in his release, strict action would be taken against those responsible.
