A man has been arrested and remanded in a case of attempted drug smuggling.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the man was arrested under allegations of drug smuggling in Rasdhoo island of Alif Alif atoll.

An operation was conducted after MPS was tipped off about an attempt to smuggle narcotics into the island, jointly by the officers stationed on the island and Police Intelligence Unit.

Arrested was Ahmed Ikhleel, 35 and native to the island.

The operation was conducted on September 12.

Officers learned that he had drugs concealed inside his body and took him to a doctor to have them extracted.

In the initial stage, the drugs weighed a total of 70 grams.

Upon being presented to the court for his remand hearing, the man was remanded for a 10-day period.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, an official at MPS said that the operation was conducted based on received information and that further investigations are currently underway.
