Mohamed Visam Sidhugee, the 26-year-old hailing from Hithadhoo district of southernmost Addu City, who was arrested in connection with the dangerous accident near Hulhumalé Central Park that killed a youth, has been remanded pending sentencing.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that Visam was presented to the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Saturday.

The judge ordered for him to be remanded until the end of the trial.

MPS revealed that the dangerous accident that killed a youth, occurred in the early hours of Friday.

Deceased in the tragic crash is a 23-year-old Maldivian man, identified as Hassan Samaah. He succumbed to severe injuries to his face and head while receiving treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital. Samaah was employed at the Maldives Correctional Service.

MPS received reports of the accident at around 02:48am on Friday.

The accident occurred after a speeding car collided with a motorcycle near Central Park.

A 26-year-old Maldivian man who was driving the car, was arrested in connection with the case.

Further investigations are currently underway in connection with the accident.

In the wake of the accident, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he has instructed all relevant government agencies and institutions to make the required amendments to the laws and regulations in place, and begin implementing stringent measures against those who drive vehicles at high speeds anywhere across the country.

Stressing that preventing such tragic incidents requires the cooperation of all parties involved, the president assured the people that his administration would take all necessary measures to stop dangerous speeding and make the streets of capital Malé City as well as outlying islands of the Maldives, safe for everyone.
