Several households in the capital region and outlying atolls have been badly damaged due to the spell of torrential showers experienced nationwide in the past week.

This was revealed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) via a thread on social media platform ‘X’ on Monday.

According to the authority, more than 37 households in the capital Malé City incurred over MVR 800,000 in losses due to damages in the wake of torrential rain showers that caused knee-deep flooding in the capital over the past few days.

Presently, authorities are conducting an assessment on the extent of damage incurred by the households in the capital region as well as 77 residences spanning 13 outlying islands.

Noting that as many as 41 homes were identified to have been affected in Malé, NDMA stated that four of them did not want to carry out damage assessment.

Initial assessment indicated that the houses incurred more than MVR 819,549 in losses.

The authority also provided temporary shelter to 23 people from five households in the city who were unable to live in their homes due to the damage.

NDMA went on to reveal that the process of assessing damage is underway after examining the forms received from outlying islands.
