Drug trafficking case
Man arrested for illegally transporting drug-filled luggage to domestic from int’l terminal, released
He was released upon the expiration of his remand
Drugs weighing five kilograms were discovered
The suspect claimed to have been unaware that the luggage contained narcotics

The man who was arrested and remanded in connection with a case of drug smuggling, has been released on conditional bail.

The man was arrested and remanded in connection with a case of drugs being discovered inside a luggage that was illegally transported from Velana International Airport (VIA)’s international terminal to domestic, that surfaced in late May.

The Criminal Court ordered to remand the suspect involved in the case, for a period of 15 days back then. The suspect was remanded for the safety and security of the community.

Upon the expiration of his remand period, the suspect was released on conditional bail.

The suspect, a 32-year-old Maldivian man, was accused of violating the legal mandate while transporting luggage from the airport’s international terminal to the domestic terminal.

Drugs weighing five kilograms were discovered inside the luggage.

The accused earlier denied all allegations against him, saying that he did not interact with anyone involved in the case in any way and that he was told to transport the luggage, by someone else.

The suspect claimed to have been unaware that the luggage contained narcotics.

The court order stated that sufficient evidence has been submitted against him and that it was clear that the suspect acted in violation of the norms and regulations followed at the airport, in the manner in which he acted.

Statements by witnesses, snap shots from CCTV footage and the report of the scene of crime officer were submitted alongside other evidence to prove the allegations against him.
