The government is to reclaim 30 hectares of land from Maavah island in Laamu atoll.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced this while speaking to residents of Maavah island, as part of his tour of several islands in Laamu atoll which he began on Thursday morning.

Addressing the residents of the island, President Muizzu revealed that the government would initiate a project to reclaim 30 hectares of land from Maavah.

Noting that the administration had initially planned to reclaim 15 hectares of land from Maavah, the president noted that this has been increased to 30 hectares.

Shedding light on the commencement of coastal protection measures to address the high tides facing the island, the president noted that his administration would revive some previously stalled initiatives throughout the country.

Muizzu stated that multiple projects of significance would be carried out, exceeding MVR 50 million in expenses.

He said that the government would initiate these projects in the coming months, some of which will begin in July.

Muizzu assured Maavah residents that the island’s development and road construction would be carried out per their wishes.

He also stated that the government would initiate resort development in the lagoon near Maavah, in the near future.
