Heavy rain showers are expected to prevail across the country.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) revealed that heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are predicted across most parts in the Maldives, over the course of the next 24 hours.
On Tuesday, some islands in northern atolls will experience rain. However, the weather is expected to clear across these regions, later in the week.
Islands in central atolls will experience mostly fine weather with scattered showers on Wednesday.
The weather will be squally across southern atolls on Wednesday.
This year’s Eid-Al-Fitr is expected to fall on Wednesday.
Highlighting that seas will be generally slight, the department revealed that sea farers must practice caution, in case seas become rough as the weather condition worsens during showers.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, the department has been issuing a number of white alerts over the past 24 hours.
The most recent one was issued on Sunday afternoon, for heavy rain and thunderstorms across Raa atoll and Laamu atoll from 11am to 4pm.
A white alert was issued on Sunday morning across Kaafu atoll to Gaaf Dhaal atoll and from Baa atoll to Gaaf Dhaal atoll for heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.
Between 8am Saturday to 8am Sunday, heavy rainfall was experienced by residents of Gaafaru island in Kaafu atoll, with 52.9 millimeters of rainfall recorded.
Further, Kaadedhdhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll experienced 49.4 millimeters of rainfall, with
Muli island of Meemu atoll experiencing 35.4 millimeters, Kadhdhoo island of Laamu atoll experiencing 31.1 millimeters and Goidhoo island of Baa atoll experiencing 24.8 millimeters of rainfall.
Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll accumulated 19.4 millimeters of rainfall and Nilandhoo island of Faafu atoll experienced 16.1 millimeters of rainfall.
Fuvahmulah City in the south of Maldives experienced 15 millimeters of rainfall, Gan island of Seenu atoll experienced 12.3 millimeters of rainfall, Maamigili island of Alif Dhaal atoll experienced 10.5 millimeters of rainfall, Gemanafushi island of Gaaf Alif atoll experienced 9.6 millimeters of rainfall, Thoddoo island of Alif Alif atoll experienced four millimeters of rainfall and Dhiffushi island of Kaafu atoll experienced 1.8 millimeters of rainfall.
Maldives experiences heavy rain showers and adverse weather conditions during the southwest monsoon as well as the northeast monsoon. Extensive periods of strong winds and adverse weather conditions are usually experienced mostly during the southwest monsoon.
Such adverse weather conditions have caused trees to uproot, roofs to be torn off, and heavy debris falling onto houses, causing immense damage. The squally weather during monsoon also causes extensive damage to crop in some islands and presents challenges for seafarers and fishermen as well. Some islands have been experiencing swell wave surges during high tides as well.
