Malé City Council has stated that efforts are underway to locate and fine individuals littering the streets of the capital.
The city council revealed that a person who was found dumping waste on the streets of the capital was summoned to the police station, by Maafannu Vili Police and the council’s community engagement unit, on Wednesday.
The man was slapped with a fine.
Those found littering the roads are fined MVR 500 by authorities.
This comes at a time several households had dumped a massive amount of garbage on the sides of the road after cleaning ahead of the ongoing fasting month of Ramadan.
The city council had launched efforts to clean up the capital, due to the high amount of waste found dumped on the roads ahead of Ramadan.
The council has also urged the general public to refrain from dumping garbage on the roads and cooperate with their efforts to make the capital city, a cleaner environment.
Mayor Adam Azim has also raised concerns regarding the issue of waste being piled on the roads by the residents of Malé City.
Azim revealed that on Wednesday lone, 42.15 tons of garbage were collected by city council employees and that over the course of the past 18 days, 305.65 tons of garbage were collected which is 12.22 containers measuring 25 feet in height.
