A new Vice President has been appointed to the Elections Commission of Maldives (EC).

Ali Nashaath was appointed Vice President of EC on Wednesday.

This was revealed by the commission via a post on social media platform ‘X’.

EC officially announced the appointment of Nashaat as the Vice President of the commission at its 820th general meeting.

The position was filled by Ismail Habeeb Abdul Raheem earlier.

In its post on ‘X’, EC revealed that Habeeb completed two terms as a member of the commission on 12 March 2024.

Nashaath was appointed as the new Vice President, at the commission’s 820th General Meeting held on 13 March 2024, in accordance with Section 7 of the Elections Commission Act.

Section 7 of the act clarifies that a President and a Vice President will be appointed to the commission, by the commission’s members.

EC is required to inform the People’s Majlis and the president of Maldives within a maximum of 48 hours, after their appointment.
