Maldives affirms strong commitment to promote, protect human rights
Sheryna also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza
She reiterated the standing invitation to all special procedures mandate holders to visit the Maldives
State Minister Sheryna delivered the country's statement at the High-level Segment of the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council

The government of Maldives remains committed to the protection and promotion of human rights.

This remark was made by State for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad, while delivering the Maldives’ statement at the High-level Segment of the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council.

Delivering the statement, the state minister shed light on the initiatives undertaken by the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in support of the promotion and protection of human rights.

She went on to emphasize on the significance the Muizzu administration has given to social issues such as gender equality, adequate housing, and disability inclusion,

Sheryna also called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Further, she reiterated the standing invitation to all special procedures mandate holders to visit the Maldives, on behalf of the government.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to meet all its international human rights obligations, Sheryna expressed the government’s commitment to ensure the realization of human rights for all.

The 55th Session of the Human Rights Council Session is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 26 February to 5 April 2024.

Maldives actively engages in the council, as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023 – 2025 term.
