The government is working to commence the project to construct a special hospital for thalassemia patients.

Speaking at the press held on Thursday to update the public on the pledges made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as part of his ‘Hafthaa 14’ roadmap, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel confirmed that preparations are currently underway to commence the work on the dedicated hospital for thalassemia patients, in order to strengthen the services provided for the treatment of thalassemia patients.

The minister stated that the president’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the construction of the hospital, as a first step.

Highlighting that a plot of land measuring 72,000 square feet has been allocated to the ministry by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for the construction of the hospital, Khaleel noted that the physical work of the project would be initiated soon, without much delay.

Adding that the ministry has also begun compiling a 10-year masterplan to eradicate thalassemia in the island nation, the minister that these efforts are also proceeding smoothly.

Some of the services to be provided at the hospital include bone marrow services, treatment before and after bone marrow transplants as well as accommodation for thalassemia patients coming to the capital Malé City from outlying islands.
