VP echoes pledge to dedicate a special hospital for children with thalassemia in Malé

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has echoed the government’s pledge to establish a dedicated hospital in the congested capital of Maldives, Malé City for children with thalassemia.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu earlier pledged to establish a special hospital to provide swift treatment for children with thalassemia, in Malé City.

The vice president reiterated this pledge, while speaking at the opening of the 3rd National Thalassemia Conference at SHE Building on Thursday.

Taking the podium at the event, the vice president announced plans of the incumbent administration to build a hospital in Hulhumalé Phase II. He assured that the project will be implemented very soon.

Noting that the government prioritizes the welfare of children with thalassemia, VP Latheef stated that efforts to prioritize their welfare are prioritized under the Muizzu administration’s ‘Hafthaa 14’ roadmap.

Highlighting that these initiatives aim to ensure special attention and access to medication and treatment are provided swiftly for thalassemia patients, VP Latheef stated that the government has also begun covering all expenses for children to receive bone marrow transplants abroad.

This was one of the president’s pledges as well.

Further speaking at the event, the vice president shed light on the incumbent administration’s dedication to make treatments accessible to as many patients as possible.

He also touched upon the arrangements to supply medication and essential supplies for thalassemia treatment across outlying islands.

Acknowledging the bravery of children battling thalassemia, VP Latheef gave his assurance that relevant ministries will work to provide better care for children with thalassemia.

The ceremony was attended by several members of the Cabinet of Ministers, high-ranking government officials, foreign ambassadors as well as the vice president’s spouse, Aishath Afreen Mohamed.
